Podgorica only became the capital of Montenegro in 2006. It’s a tiny city with only 151,000 inhabitants. The guidebook says something like ‘for obvious reasons, Podgorica is not a tourist destination’. Basically, there are only about three things to see there, one of which is this bridge. The other two are a clock tower and an old Turkish bridge. Despite this, it’s a lively place in the evenings – and, after spending five days in Croatia, it was lovely not to see another tourist in sight.
A random fact: it’s also the hottest place in Europe with a record high of 46 degrees in August 2007.
