It was not until I returned home and Googled the Warsaw news that I found out what I had stumbled upon in the centre of Warsaw today.

10th April 2012, marks the second anniversary of the plane crash which killed the Polish president and 95 other passengers as they flew to Russia to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre of over 200,000 Polish officers by Soviet secret police acting on Stalin’s orders during WWII. Today, Poland held moving services to commemorate the victims of that plane crash.

At the same time, about 1000 Nationalists also took to the streets in Warsaw. They are the supporters of the late president’s twin brother, who has repeatedly boycotted the official commemorations of his death, stating that the Russian authorities and the Polish liberal government were responsible for the crash. He has gone as far as suggesting that the crash was actually an assassination.

My block of flats is just behind me on this side of the road. Downstairs, there are post boxes for nearly 200 flats on nearly 20 floors. The block looks identical to the 100+ or so on the road – I was slightly scared about not recognising it! You can see the lights from them going off into the distance on the other side of the road.

I feel a little explanation as to why I felt the need to post this image being as it’s not a good photo in any sense of the word. In true primary teacher instructions mode:

To do the washing:

 1. Put the clothes and washing powder in

2. Put the drain pipe down the toilet.

3. Turn the water on – you can just make out the ‘on-off’ on the wall

4. Move the washing machine back from wherever it has travelled to during the last wash so that you can:

5. Plug it in.

Be careful – the washer starts as soon as you plug it in. The drain pipe and the water must be turned on before this! It is essential to check that the washer does not travel off the mat (it breaks the tiles!) or far enough to pull the plug out.

I feel I must point out that this in no way bothers me – I think it’s fantastic!
